William Howard (or Horace) Clayborn was born on 31 March 1857 in DeKalb County, Tennessee, to James and Melinda Clayborn.¹ In 1880 at the age of twenty-three he was still living at home with his parents.² Roughly three years later, on 1 July 1883, he married Matilda Driver in DeKalb County.³ Together William and Matilda had six children, all listed in greater detail below. William, Matilda, and their six children were living together in DeKalb County during the 1900 census, but within a year Matilda would die and William would remarry.

William married (2nd) Mahaley Tramel Vanderpool on 9 February 1901 and together they had a child, Tina, listed below.⁴ William was alive at least long enough to father this child, but died in November 1902.⁵ Mahaley then re-married to Thomas Newby Smith on 3 September 1905.⁶ Mahaley and Thomas had one child together, Jesse Smith.⁷ Presumably Mahaley and Thomas divorced because on 9 February 1907 (less than a year after Jesse was born) Thomas married Delily Fish.⁸

After William’s death his six children by his first wife Matlida Driver Clayborn – Eva, Charlie, Maudie J., Bonnie Etta, Clay Evans, and William Elijah – were raised by Matilda’s sister Mary Etta “Minnie” Driver Parker (25 Oct 1872 – 19 Sep 1954) and her husband William M. “Bill” Parker (10 Jul 1865 – 25 Jan 1951). Although Bill and Minnie Parker had no children of their own, they reared these six Clayborn children as their own.⁹ “They were father and mother to the Clayborn children after their parent’s death.” ¹⁰

Eva Clayborn (click name for separate biographical sketch) was born on 5 April 1886 in DeKalb County, Tennessee, and died on 30 October 1958.¹¹
Charlie Clayborn (click name for separate biographical sketch) was born in March 1888 in DeKalb County, Tennessee, and died on 27 April 1957.
Maudie J. Clayborn (click name for separate biographical sketch) was born in March 1890 and died on 29 October 1979.¹²
Bonnie Etta Clayborn was born on 26 January 1892.¹³ A marriage certificate was issued to Martin Braswell and Bonnie Clayborn on 18 August 1909, however this wedding was never officiated and the wedding license not returned. She married (1st) Charley H. Dodd on 8 August 1914. Together they had one child, John Lee Dodd (born and died on 25 July 1915). The death certificate states, “John Lee Dodd, male infant of Charley Dodd B. Gassaway and Berni (Bonnie) Claborn B. Dowelltown. Infant not fully developed. D. 25 July 1915 WH Adams, MD of Liberty Burial by WC Vick of Liberty.” Bonnie divorced Charley soon after for physical abuse. Bonnie then lived with and took care of her adoptive parents, her aunt and uncle, Mary Etta “Minnie” Driver Parker (25 October 1872 – 19 September 1954) and her husband William M. “Bill” Parker (10 July 1865 – 25 January 1951). Later in life, on 29 August 1958 in Cannon County, she married (2nd) Lon Crook.¹⁴ Lon was born on 21 May 1889 and died on 2 February 1966.¹⁵ Dianna Clayborn, daughter of William Elijah “Lige” Clayborn related that, “Aunt Bonnie was my favorite of all. She was like a grandmother on the Clayborn side that I never had. I loved her very much, and she loved me in return like her granddaughter, as she did not have any children.”¹⁶ Bonnie followed in death on 24 November 1967 and is buried beside her adoptive parents, her uncle and aunt, Bill and Mary Etta “Minnie” Driver Parker, in the Dismal Cemetery near Liberty, Tennessee.

Clay Evans Clayborn was born on 15 October 1894 and worked as a farmer.¹⁷World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, DeKalb County, Tennessee, Selective Service System, National Archives and Records Administration. Clay married (1st) Nettie Neal on 16 December 1915 and together they had four children.¹⁸Nettie Neal was born on 13 October 1899. Nettie died on 11 January 1929.¹⁹Nettie Neal Clayborn has a nice tombstone and marker at the Dismal Cemetery. It is believed that she is still buried there yet her name is listed on a tombstone at Salem Cemetery. If she had been re-interred at Salem the tombstone likely would have been relocated to Salem. Clay married (2nd) Tabbie May Colwell on 18 July 1931.²⁰Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002, Tennessee State Library and Archives. He married (3rd) Mattie Driver Vanatta on 24 May 1937.[Mattie Driver Vanatta Clayborn was born on 28 September 1910 to Ned Driver and Clara Neal Driver (married 26 Oct 1905). Thus, her maiden name was Driver (a common name among this branch’s spouses) but prior to marrying Clay she married first to Charlie Vanatta on 30 Aug 1923.] Clay died in June 1983 and his third wife, Mattie, died on 08 January 2000.²¹Mattie’s date of death is based upon her tombstone.
1. Hubert P. Clayborn was born on 19 January 1917 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.²² He married Desivata Taylor on 24 December 1935 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.²³ They had one daughter, Grace Ann Clayborn, who was living in Yonkers, New York, in 1983. Hubert died on 14 May 1983 and is buried beside his father at Salem Cemetery in Liberty, Tennessee.²⁴
2. Bertie Mai Clayborn was born on 23 March 1920. She married Ed Driver (born on 9 Feb 1914) on 17 March 1934, just before her 14th birthday. Ed died on 3 September 1968 and is buried in Salem Cemetery in Liberty, Tennessee. Bertie later married William Lillard of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. Together they had three children listed below. Bertie later married William Madison Lillard (born 1 June 1921, died 28 December 2001) on 2 August 1975 in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee, where they resided.
  1. Leette Driver was born on 19 June 1934 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. She married Grady Vaught (born 27 September 1932, died 6 October 1971) on 10 June 1950 in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee.²⁵Tennessee State Library and Archives, accessed via Ancestry.com, 24 February 2015. She was a Baptist and worked at Textron/Avco in Nashville, Tennessee. Together, Leette and Grady had two sons listed below.     1. Eddie Wayne Vaught was born in Wilson County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Jane Dedman on 12 November 1971 in Wilson County, Tennessee , and they lived in Lebanon, Wilson County in 2007. Together Eddie and Jane had three sons: Jeff Vaught was born in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee and married Sherry; Chris Vaught was born in Wilson County, Tennessee; and Greg Vaught was born in Wilson County, Tennessee.

Billy was a 1956 graduate of Watertown High School and was a member of Fairview Church. He worked for the Tennessee Woolen Mills for thirty-five years and retired as custodian from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Billy died on 24 December 2013 at the Quality Care Nursing Home in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee, and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Lebanon, Tennessee.²⁸ This couple resided in Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee.
  3. Brenda Joyce Driver was born on 2 December 1943 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. She married first to Robert Phillips Burton on 23 December 1961 in Wilson County, Tennessee. She married second to Everett Gividen on 3 November 1965 in Wilson County, Tennessee. She married third to Rondal Ray Pulley on 1 March 1986 in Sumner County, Tennessee. Brenda died on 20 December 1990 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee, and was buried in Salem Cemetery in Liberty, Tennessee.²⁹
3. James E. Clayborn (called “Jim”) was born on 22 January 1922 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. He married Ina Mai Self on 21 May 1939 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. He entered the service of the United States Navy on 1 May 1944. A Seaman First Class, he served on the USS Flaherty. Discharged on 22 January 1946, he was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He and Ina Mae Self Clayborn settled in Davidson County, Tennessee.³⁰ Together they had one child, Doyle Clayborn.
4. Lula Clayborn was born on 22 September 1924 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. She married first to Ernest Hays on 27 November 1940 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Together they had two children listed below. Lula married second to Robert Snyder (born on 31 May 1913). They resided in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee. William Elijah Clayborn (called “Lige”) (click name for separate biographical sketch) was born on 10 June 1898 and died on 20 April 1961.⁴²
Tina Melinda Clayborn (called “Tiney”) was born on 17 March 1902 to William H. and Mahaley Tramel Vanderpool Clayborn.⁴³Copied from Tina Vanatta Hill tombstone at Salem Cemetery, Liberty, Tennessee. Tina Clayborn married Clarence Vanatta (born 9 April 1894) on 4 July 1919 in DeKalb County, Tennessee; her mother Mahaley Tramel Vanderpool gave permission for her to marry.⁴⁴Based on information from his tombstone, Clarence Vanatta was born on 9 Apr 1894 and died on 10 Nov 1922. Clarence had served in the U.S. Army during World War I, from November 1917 to 20 May 1919. Tina and her husband Clarence are listed in the 1920 census as living with Tina’s mother Mahaley and Tina’s half-brother Jesse Smith.⁴⁵1920 United States Census, Civil District 24, DeKalb County, Tennessee. Together they had two children, Buford and Othal. Clarence died on 10 Nov 1922 from pneumonia with complications of overheating from fighting a brush fire. He was buried at Snow Hill Cemetery near Smithville, Tennessee. Tina would marry later in her life to Samuel Russell Hill (18 December 1905 – 6 November 1971) on 7 May 1927 and they lived in Alexandria, Tennessee in 1967.⁴⁶According to Sam Russell Hill’s tombstone at Salem Cemetery, Liberty, Tennessee, he was born on 18 December 1905 and died on 6 November 1971. They would have seven children, all listed as the youngest seven children below. Tina Clayborn Vanatta Hill died on 17 May 1980 and was buried in Salem Cemetery in Liberty, Tennessee.⁴⁷Obituary of Tina Hill, Smithville Review Newspaper, 28 May 1980.
1. Buford Neal Vanatta was born on 15 July 1920 in DeKalb County, Tennessee, as the son of Tina Clayborn and Clarence Vanatta. He married Jessie Lee Robinson (born 30 January 1926) on 26 October 1946 in Rossville, Georgia. “He entered the US Army in World War II on 18 July 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and trained there and at Fort Eustis, Virginia. A Technician Fifth Grade, he was with the 229th Antiaircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion, and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater from 21 December 1943 to 21 December 1945, seeing combat in New Guinea and the Philippines. His awards are the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one bronze star and the World War II Victory Medal. He worked for the Veterans Administration in the maintenance department as a painter for twenty-six years. Buford and Jessie Lee had four children listed below. Buford died on 22 December 1998 at University Medical Center in Lebanon, Tennessee, and was buried in Salem Cemetery, Liberty, Tennessee.

  2. Joyce Ann Vanatta was born on 8 February 1953 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. She married John David Foutch on 13 July 1973 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Together they had two children.
    1. Jennifer Elaine Foutch was born on 3 May 1974. She married Keith in 1999 and they later divorced.
    2. Daniel Ryan Foutch was born on 26 October 1989.
  3. Patsy Lynn Vanatta was born on 09 April 1954. She married Nicholas Hale Nokes on 14 April 1972 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.
    1. Nicholas Hale Nokes Jr. was born on 25 March 1976. He married Susan Springler on 27 October 1999.
  4. Kristie Diann Vanatta was born on 18 October 1971 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. She married Kyle Marcel Cantrell (born 31 October 1969) on 18 April 1991 in DeKalb County, Tennessee.
2. Othal Boyd Vanatta was born on 10 February 1922 to Tina and Clarence Vanatta. He died on 10 July 1925 from flux (bowel disorder), and was buried at Snow Hill Cemetery, near Smithville, Tennessee. His mother and brother also almost died from this ailment.⁵⁰
3. Gertie Mae Hill was born on 11 March 1928 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill. She married a man with the last name of McGee and lived in Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1980. She died on 10 November 2000.
4. Paul Hill was born and died in December 1929 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill.
5. Russell Lendon Hill was born on 26 May 1931 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill. He served as a Sargent in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Russell married Corinne Netherton (born 25 September 1931) on 20 January 1951 in Rossville, Georgia. They had one child, Brenda Hill, on 22 December 1953. Brenda married Billy Nixon on 23 July 1971 in Wilson County, Tennessee, and they lived near Watertown, Tennessee in 2015. Brenda and Billy had one daughter, Rachel Nixon. Russell Lendon Hill died on 12 December 1996 in Watertown, Wilson County, Tennessee. He was buried at Jones Hill Cemetery, Watertown, Tennessee.
6. Clarence Edward Hill (called “Ed”) was born on 23 August 1932 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill. He married Anita Gail Lawrence on 03 January 1969 in Wilson County, Tennessee, and lived in Watertown, Tennessee.
7. Silas Vincent Hill was born on 8 March 1934 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill. He married Melba Sue Arnold on 13 June 1964 in Wilson County, Tennessee, and lived in Watertown, Tennessee.
8. Bobby Gene Hill was born on 15 May 1935 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill. He died on 19 August 1986 and was buried at Hillview Memorial Cemetery in Alexandria, Tennessee.
9. Viola Ann Hill was born on 28 March 1937 to Tina Clayborn Vanatta and Samuel Russell Hill. She married Billy Louis Davenport on 29 October 1954 in Wilson County, Tennessee, and lived in Kodak, Tennessee, in 1980 and in Knoxville in 1998.⁵¹
